'the sounds of the street began to fill my ears'

10.01.17am BST (GMT +0100) Sun 5th Aug 2007

Tripped over a piece on news.bbc.co.uk comprising letters written by an Iranian teacher who got granted asylum in the UK.

The article, which comprises letters sent to a friend in Iran, pick up on:

  • The psychological effects of fleeing.

  • The reasons she and her family had to leave Iran.

  • The things she misses, the things that are different.

  • Trying to build a new life.

The Daily Mail and the rest like to band 'asylum seeker' around; it should never be used when 'economic migrant' is what they really mean.
