Art in everyone's pockets

Money: a pile of UK / sterling coins /currency (2007) (photography: Ben Prescott)

Low denomination British coinage is set to be re-released with completely new designs on the tail-side. Each coin forms part of a larger image, which is shown in full on the £1 coin.

Good to see some thought going into those little pieces of art that we all take for granted in our pockets and purses.

Notable that the design is by a 26 year old - not many young designers could hope to introduce design into millions of people's lives.

A benefit, I suppose, of not having adopted the Euro. We'd lose the ability to design the 'tail' side, no doubt putting the monarch's head on the side of the coin that national mints can design.

Hardly a loss of sovereignty though, so don't read too much into that.
