Free Windows security software

I've been putting AVG on machines 'pro bono' for a few years now. I'm not aware its let any viruses through.

Key advantage: simplicity. I've had to do surgery on a couple of machines to get busted copies of McAfee and Norton removed. They'd been completely bastardised by some infection or another.

Th21Jun2007 - Just ripped Norton Internet off a Vista machine and replaced it in part with AVG, no trouble.

Browse into 'home and home/office' and then select 'Zone Alarm' from the list of products. That's the one with the free download. It'll try to persuade you to take a 15 day free trial of Zone Alarm Pro on a number of occasions; watch out for that!

Works very well once you've trained it for your key applications. It doesn't handle regularly updated software very well; so Firefox and Thunderbird tend to keep getting untrusted. But they ask to be upgraded, so its really just a user training issue!

You can't share an internet connetion with the free version.

Sa20May2007 - not yet Vista ready. Consensus on line seems to be 'use Vista's until Zonealarm is ready.' Got to be better than Norton!

Windows

Good internal Windows programming stuff. When trying to fix a bug you've never fallen over before, it helps to have a background knowledge of bugs in general. Blog covers a variety of bugs old and new, and does a really good job explaining them.

Computers & Tech

Article on IBM dW about how iSeries and / or its turning tools recommend the addition of indexes. Majors on a new v5r4 feature, but ties together v5r2/r3 resources.

Some of the ones that poke fun at computer stuff and computer culture are brilliant.

Green stuff, recycling, etc

'Superuse is an online community of designers, architects and everybody else who is interested in inventive ways of recycling.' Got it off the Innocent news email, 27.4.07

The crew I get my 'tricity from (don't have gas). As well as sourcing my power responsibly (erm .. expensively) I've also hacked down my usage as well. Tracking usage daily certainly highlights what a difference you can make ..

Good cycle campaigning news, with a PDF newsletter, parliamentary coverage and international stuff.

IANAL, but this does seem to be a half decent stab at the subject.
